Pham An Hai draws his inspiration from the city of his birth (in 1967)-Hanoi, its streets, its old architecture and its buildings, each with their individual character. These cityscapes evoke images of the artist's beloved home town in various seasons or times of the day, in winter or in the red light of the evening sun. Sometimes there is a tranquil, romantic edge to his works. On that level, Pham An Hai's cityscapes often simulate inner landscapes, landscapes of people, of their hearts and souls. Many of these paintings seem to depict memories of tranquility, while others, executed in more rapid and powerful brush strokes, seem to express urgency and anxiety captured in time.
Having exhibited in both the West and widely in Asia, Pham An Hai's paintings are now beginning to find their place in the permanent collections of some of the contemporary art museums of the region.
The works illustrated in this volume range in date of creation from 1994 to 2007, providing the reader with an excellent view of this artist's explorations over this period.

Aung Kyaw Htet, born in Myaungmya in 1965, studied at the State School of Fine Arts in Rangoon. He is a devout Buddhist and grew up in a small village-two factors which have a strong influence on his art. His paintings of religious life in Burma show monks and nuns in a realistic manner, though non-essential objects are omitted from the paintings in order to focus on his subjects. Unlike many of his Burmese contemporaries who tend to focus more on the overall religious theme, Aung Kyaw Htet paints the faces of monks and nuns in great detail, to illustrate their humanity. The artist's use of bright colours attracts the viewers' attention to the essential serenity within his paintings. The works of Aung Kyaw Htet have been exhibited in Burma, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan (2006), and his works are in the permanent collections of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the National Museum of Myanmar, tributes to his growing artistic reputation.
The current volume features works of this artist spanning the period 1998 to 2007 provide a panoramic view of this exciting artist's works over the past decade.

Cong Kim Hoa was born in Hanoi in 1962 and graduated from the Hanoi Industrial College of Fine Art in 1985. She is one of the few female artists who made lacquer painting their medium. Hoa specialises in semi-abstract and abstract paintings, however one can often recognize the contours of masks, faces, fish or lotus flowers in her work. Her work may be viewed as an abstract take on depicting the various elements making up traditional Vietnam.
The present monograph illustrates works by the artist spanning the years 1994 to 2006, a period over which a distinct evolution from figural works toward abstraction can be observed. It also includes an essay by artist Trinh Tuan on the art of Vietnamese lacquer.
The book has been specially printed using five colour technology, which enables the accurate portrayal the artist's lacquer works, employing metallic gold leaf.

Dinh Quan was born in 1964 in Haiphong and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Art College in 1990. The main focus of his lacquer paintings is the female, which he often depicts in a refined, surrealist style. His ghostlike women sometimes seem sensual or deconstructed at times. Dinh Quan has experimented with innovative approaches to the traditional art of lacquer painting and invented a unique and dynamic style variation to the traditional technique.
The traditional way of creating lacquer paintings is to paint layer upon layer in a long and arduous process. Dinh Quan applies a modified technique by mixing lacquer with a variety of substances such as gold, silver and epoxy to achieve a unique surface texture, and to give a three dimensional feel to his painting.
The present monograph illustrates works from 1994 to 2004, and includes contributions by Shireen Naziree, Jasdeep Sandhu, Thai Ba Van, Luong Xuan Doan and Bang Sy Truc. Also included is a DVD with a short video presentation of Dinh Quan's technique.
The book has been specially printed using five colour technology, which enables the accurate portrayal the artist's lacquer works, employing metallic gold leaf.

Flavours offers a tantalising taste of Thailand's vibrant burgeoning contemporary art scene, from the end of the last century to the dawn of a new millennium.
The last decade has seen significant changes in Thailand - economically, politically, environmentally, and culturally. Barometers of this dramatic upheaval, Thai artists are attempting to make sense of the country's rapid modernisation. Their art assumes a diverse array of media, often melding international art trends with distinctly Thai craftsmanship. Increasingly, Thai artists are garnering plaudits at both Asian showcases and solo exhibitions abroad.
The book begins with an extensive overview of recent developments, highlighting particular issues, trends, and events that have played a role in shaping the art of today. It also features career profiles of 23 of the country's established and emerging young artists, with thematic descriptions, more than 80 colour illustrations, and revealing insights from the artists themselves.
With so little currently published on the swift progression in Thai art, author Steven Pettifor provides us with a clear and concise assessment of the present artistic climate. A keen observer of Thai art's growing international accreditation, he writes with direct and accessible language.

ISBN-10: 974-94336-8-8 $35.00
ISBN-13: 978-974-94336-8-3
This book is an introduction to contemporary Vietnamese painting, illustrating works completed between 1996 and 2004. In the first part, the art historian and independent curator Shireen Naziree covers the background of contemporary Vietnamese painting and places it in the context of Southeast Asia. There is a section on how lacquer paintings are made, followed by profiles of fifteen prominent artists written by the Vietnamese art historian and critic Phan Cam Thuong.
Many of the artists started their careers during the mid-1980s, and may thus be labeled the doi moi generation, after the Vietnamese term for 'renovation' and the process of opening Vietnam to the outside world. Although there had been many talented artists of the older generation, the artists of the doi moi generation were the first to break free from more conventional painting styles.
While works in water and oil-paints have been included, lacquer paintings have been given special attention in the book. The lacquer technique and materials produce unique colours, luster and texture. Other countries produce lacquer ware, but only in Vietnam has the synthesis of traditional lacquer techniques and modern painting been successful. The art of lacquer painting is thus an important Vietnamese contribution to the global contemporary art scene.

U Lun Gywe was born in 1930 and is one of the most well known and well respected artists in Burma today and is considered probably the greatest living master of Burmese painting. He graduated from the Art Institute of Teacher's Training and continued his studies under famous artists such as U Thet Win, U Chit Maung, U San Win, U Thein Han and U Ngwe Gaing. 'I paint according to my emotions', says the artist, 'drawing inspiration from smell and textures, light and shadow'. When painting flowers, he feels their freshness, their growth and their movements. U Lun Gywe is a master with colours, often in an impressionistic manner, and is particularly fond of painting the beauty of women. In addition to oil paintings, he also creates works in watercolours, pastel and by drawing.
This book was produced on the occasion of the solo exhibition 'A Retrospective' by U Lun Gywe (b. 1930) at Bangkok's innovative Thavibu Gallery. It includes contributions by art historian Shireen Naziree as well as an overview of Myanmar visual art by Sein Myo Myint.
The present monograph illustrates examples of the master painter's works dating from 1964 to 2004.
