  A Dictionary of CHINESE CERAMICS
by Wang Qinngzheng (translated by Lillian Chin & Jay Xu)
2002, 352 pages, over 1,000 illustrations many of which in colour, hardbound with dust jacket, 33 x 25 cm.
ISBN 981-04-6023-6 $275.00

China's tradition of pottery, stoneware and porcelain production first started in Neolithic times, its passage marked by continuing technological improvements, shared artistic expressions and developments from parallel forms of media such as lacquerware, metalwork, textiles, painting, woodwork and carving, amongst other art forms. Chinese ceramics have stood out for their beauty, form and function, and for their impact on domestic and international demand. Their art historical value has helped scholars and historians refine information and data on China's social and political history and culture. Today, China's ceramic legacy dominates many art collections worldwide and continues to inspire active scholarly research. This volume, the first ever of its kind in the English language, is aimed at collectors, curators, scholars and enthusiasts engaged in this fascinating art form.
Information provided serves a comprehensive range of enquiries arising from the study of Chinese porcelains and has been carefully researched and written by internationally known expert and scholar, Professor Wang Qingzheng and his team of experts at the Ceramics Department of the Shanghai Museum. Though not a strict taxonomic study, this book addresses the artistic, stylistic, technical and historical aspects of Chinese ceramics and their manufacture.
There are 2,165 entries, accompanied by over 1,000 colour plates and black-and-white illustrations, and further supported by maps, a historical chronology and a time-line of ceramic production throughout China's history. Also included are line drawings providing a graphic analysis of the evolution and variety of shapes and decorative styles found on Chinese ceramics. Four indices assist readers in locating entries in English or Pinyin.

THAI CERAMIC ART
The Three Religions
by Nicol Guérin and Dick van Oenen
2005, 320 pp., colour photos throughout, hardbound with dust jacket, 30 x 22 cm.
ISBN 981-05-0736-4 $76.00

A detailed study on the 14th-16th century Thai ceramics wares that played a role in the local Buddhist and animist ceremonies, approached from an art historical point of view. The authors establish the degree of interaction between the many cultures that influence the form, design, function and usage of these wares, and draws on the underlying historic, religious and stylistic linkages with India, China, Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia and other parts of Southeast Asia. Throughout the study, comparisons are made with other Asian cultures, decorative styles and chronology, which add further dimensions to a hitherto relatively unexplored art form.
Research for this monograph was undertaken by the authors over a period of twenty years, inspired by their personal passion for the subject; over this period, the authors had access to practically all known major collections around the world, many of which have not been published before. The result is an essential reference for museum curators, archeologists, collectors and dealers.

  Chinese Carving
by Craig Clunas
1996, 103 pp., richly illustrated in colour, hardbound with dust jacket, 31 x 22.
ISBN 981-3066-12-1 $43.00

Many items of Chinese carving were created specifically for export and have had a great impact on the western understanding of 'the East'. They continue even now, as museum pieces, to influence and reinforce the western notion of a homogenous Chinese culture. Clunas takes the reader on a kaleidoscopic tour of the subject, investigating and discussing carved objects of from the Shang Dynasty (about 1700 - 1050 BCE) to the present day, of various materials from wood and stone to ivory, and of diverse provenances, from the vast collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
  FOR THE IMPERIAL COURT:
Qing Porcelain from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art
by Rosemary E. Scott
1997, 160 pp., richly illustrated in colour, hardbound with dust jacket, 26 x 24 cm.
ISBN 981-3066-01-6 $43.00

The Qing dynasty porcelains most familiar in the west are those made for the export trade. The collections of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London is unusual in covering very few of these exported porcelains. Instead, Sir Percival sought to acquire the rare and beautifully decorated items that would have been made for and appreciated by the Chinese imperial court, mainly pieces created before the 19th century. This work was published as a catalogue for an exhibition of Qing porcelain held by the Percival David Foundation and the American Federation of Arts and includes a thorough introduction to the collection and the porcelains it contains.
PORCELAIN from the VUNG TAU WRECK

ISBN 981-04-5208-X $54.00

The Vung Tau wreck and its cargo was identified in 1990 and excavated by Sverker Hallstrom who found a total of 48,288 items of fine Chinese blue-and-white porcelains and other Chinese artefacts. This book, richly illustrated by colour plates, provides the latest research in the art historical context of the Sino-Dutch trade in the 17th century and examines the porcelain in two groups, underglaze blue Jingdezhen wares and Southern provincial wares. It further presents data and commentary on the systematic underwater fieldwork, documentation and raising of the cargo.
